In 2008, the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) created one of its first whole-building energy efficiency targeted programs, called “Preservation through Smart Rehab.” The Canon House apartment building in Canonsburg, PA was one of only a few pilot projects for this program.
PHFA selected a nationally-known building energy consulting firm to conduct the energy audit of this building. That consulting firm recommended that PHFA hire BPA as the architect for this energy retrofit project, because of BPA’s experience in the energy auditing field, as well as being an architecture firm.
BPA worked with the energy auditor, the Owner, and PHFA to select and create construction documents for the most financially beneficial and desirable energy improvement measures. As the Architect for the project, BPA oversaw the bidding and construction administration processes. A year after the project was complete, the building owner told BPA that the building’s annual energy cost had decreased by 25%.
