BPA was introduced to this 276-unit Passive House-targeted apartment building project when construction was more than halfway complete. The project team sought out BPA for our expertise in verifying multifamily Passive House certified projects. The ideal time to start the Passive House verification process is during the project’s design phase, so there was a good deal of catching up to do when BPA joined the team.
BPA led the effort to create a comprehensive inspection and testing program, meeting all the verification requirements of ENERGY STAR, EPA Indoor airPLUS, DOE Zero Energy Ready Home, and Phius+ certifications. BPA then assisted the local HERS rater in completing the more advanced parts of the testing and verification, such as the computer-controlled whole building blower door test, the ventilation system commissioning, and measuring the power draw of the energy recovery ventilator units. BPA helped the team navigate the certification process, and now Second + Delaware is one of the largest Phius+ certified projects in the U.S.
